Part way through Friday morning with no definitive plans for the weekend, we booked a hotel room in Draper and decided to take a spontaneous overnight getaway to Utah! We tried to leave town during Liam's nap time hoping he would get some sleep on the drive down but I think he was just as excited as we were and actually didn't end up sleeping a single second of the entire day! We got to Draper just in time to check into our hotel and attempt for a second time to give Liam a late nap. Lots of jabbering and giggling coming from his pack n' play led us to defeat and instead we went for an early dinner. Nic and I are both such planners that it felt a little odd just driving around and picking a random restaurant to eat at without prior research but we knew pizza was a safe option, especially with Liam, so we sat on the patio at The Pie Pizzeria. It wasn't the BEST pizza we've ever eaten (too much cheese and grease) but it wasn't the worst either. haha In other words, researching restaurants beforehand could have some merit but that was not the purpose of this spontaneous trip and it made it really fun! Liam was antsy as usual while we waited for our pizza ... nothing that covering his face with stickers and rolling his little dump trunk across the table couldn't fix! ;) I LOVE little boys!
After dinner my sweet sweet husband offered to take me to Target because he knows how much I love that store! Siri took us on a wild goose chase to get there (just like she did for most of the weekend)! I don't think I've ever heard the words "proceed to the route" so many times in one day. haha Sorry Nic! At Target we bought half the things we needed that I accidentally left behind. Oops! haha I blame it on last minute and quick packing. After the necessities I wandered into the toddler boys clothing section and was there for the other half of the time. haha Why is it so much fun shopping for kid's clothes?! Their new Cat and Jack line is adorable.
Amazingly enough, after Target Liam was still awake enough to swim at the hotel pool. He is getting so great at kicking his little legs when we lay him on his tummy across our arms! His favorite part was the hot tub though, after his momma's heart. Don't worry, we only dunked in his feet for just a minute or two though. We chose a hotel room that had a diverter wall between the sitting area and the bed and it made bedtime really easy because Liam couldn't see us on the other side. We did have to leave the room dark for a bit until he fell asleep but then after that we turned on a lamp and both read until we were tired.
We spent Saturday morning at the Living Planet Aquarium in Draper. We had originally debated about whether or not to take Liam to the Hogle Zoo or the Aquarium and after stepping outside into 95 degree heat at 10 A.M. we were so glad we chose to experience the aquarium. It did not disappoint! It was absolutely amazing! Nic and I's favorite part was the first thing we did, the South America exhibit.
My new FAVORITE picture of Liam & Nic ...
Liam is a bird lover so he had so much fun listening to them talk! We'd never seen a macaw or toucans in real life before and they are so beautiful!
When we came across this gigantic snake this was the face Liam made ...
Do you blame him? haha I felt the same way! This particular exhibit had the largest fish I've ever seen in my entire life! They were both amazing to look and totally terrifying at the same time! haha
The exhibit was really humid and all of these tropical plants were real plants you would find in South America. It was pretty incredible being surrounded in them and feeling like you walked into a room and landed right in a piece of South America.
I was so excited to take Liam across this net bridge but quickly realized I was definitely not wearing appropriate shoes. Our first step on my shoe slipped off the thick rope going down the middle and wedged itself between the rope and net. There was a family waiting to go behind us and it took me seriously 5 minutes to get my shoe out with an antsy toddler pulling on me to go forward. It was pretty embarrassing. haha However, I would do it in those silly sandals over and over again because look at how happy it made Liam, he loved it!!!
I think Liam's favorite part of the aquarium were the otters! They were the busiest animals there so it made them really fun to watch! Here is Liam and daddy in a small glass window space peaking in on the otters while they scratched their bellies.
The captain of the submarine ...
I love this picture of Liam playing in a control room. It had tons of computer screens and buttons to press so naturally he loved every minute of it!
Most of the enclosures had a rock ledge on the bottom that connected to the glass and Liam kept trying to climb up on all of them and be as close as humanly possible. haha
I love this picture of Nic. He is so darn handsome!
I could kiss those cheeks all day!
The only picture we got on our trip of our whole family. A family selfie with Liam's eyes closed!
After the aquarium we drove to downtown Salt Lake! Once again, Siri took us on a wild goose chase where we got on and off of the freeway about 3 different times. It was insane. haha But something to laugh about since! We had lunch at a place we'd never been before called Kneaders. I've heard their french toast and breakfast foods are out of this world but we didn't quite make it there during breakfast serving hours so we had sandwiches instead and they were so yummy! We shopped around at the City Creek Mall and I managed to walk away with a new pair of Salomon workout shoes (my current ones are about 4 years old and needed replaced) and a pair of Albion Fit leggings that I love. I felt so spoiled! Nic, you are so good to me. Thank you! Liam loved watching the fountain show and pointing at everything as it changed! I love this age he is at right now!
On the drive home Liam was totally exhausted and fell asleep within the first few minutes of getting in the car, sweet boy. We had such a fun time, I can't wait to do it again! Maybe next Spring to see the Hogle Zoo!
